Judging Color Appearance Mode of a stimulus with short duration

When you see a color, you discern whether it is from a reflecting surface or a self-emitting light source. The former mode of color appearance is called object color and the latter light-source color. There are border luminance dividing different color modes. Spatial characteristics were mainly examined for the mode of color appearance, but little is known no attention has been paid on the temporal characteristics. In this study, particularly, the border luminance is examined for the stimuli with short duration of presentation. We measured the border luminance between the color appearance modes using the PEST method. The experiment was conducted in an ordinary room. Observers perceived the stimulus as if it was pasted on the wall. We employed four durations of stimulus, five levels of inter stimulus luminance(ISL). We measured relationship between duration, ISL and border luminance. Our results show that observers could judge easily the mode of color appearance in the most of the conditions and higher ISL cause higher border luminance in short duration condition.
