Measurements and units for photobiological and photochemical quantities
The needs for measurements in the field of photobiology are becoming more and more important due to the increasing use of optical radiation in medicine as well as for diagnostics, treatments or safety. To be reliable and easy to compare worldwide these measurements should be done in SI units. Using some agreed conventions, especially for action spectra, and applying the rules of defining the SI units, it is possible to express the results of measurements of photobiological quantities in usual SI units. This paper describes the method for expressing the results of measurements of photobiological quantities in SI units and gives example of such results. The method used for expressing the results of measurements of photobiological quantities could also be used for expressing the results of measurements of photochemical quantities, because, from a metrological point of view, the basic phenomenon are of the same kind.
