Color capability analysis of monitors used for representing the hardcopy colors
An approach for analyzing and evaluating the color capability of monitors used for representing the hardcopy colors was presented. According to the CIEL*a*b* sampling data. The gamut description values r and a*b* gamut boundary line corresponding to a determined L* were determined. Base on these, the gamut volume and six divided volumes that exceeded the monitor color gamut in red, yellow, green, cyan, blue and magenta hue ranges respectively, were derived, indicating the general and every hue range color differences between the two devices. Then, by comparison of the two devices a*b* gamut lines at one L*, the a*b* area and the most chroma color of the output colors out off the monitor gamut were calculated. Considering all the L* values, the maximal chroma differences and L* values corresponding to the a*b* plane which had the worst output color shortage respectively in the six hue ranges, were gained. All these parameters were combined with the 3_D or 2_D figures. Experiments were carried out on two monitors and two color printers. The results showed that the parameters were consistent with the vision estimation. And the approach could open out the capability of the monitor for representing the hardcopy colors..
