Use of colour: considerations & applications

With the advent of efficient saturated LED sources, we are seeing a rise in the application of coloured lighting. Colour is assumed to have a psychological, emotional as well as a physiological, biological effect. From a lighting design point of view, two questions arise. First of all, coloured light is increasingly being used in applications, such as shops and reception areas, where coloured light is used to attract people and address the emotional responses. If coloured light causes biological effects when perceived over a longer time period, in what way are employees affected and what lighting solutions need to be offered? Secondly, photobiological research indicates that coloured light is more effective than white light when addressing biological effects of light. Does this mean that smaller and dimmer light sources can be offered to realise comparable effects as those produced by white light? In lighting design, this is interesting when taking into consideration freedom of design and energy aspects. Results from a literature review seem to be inconclusive. This paper introduces experiments to look into the use of coloured light in lighting design with respect to conscious and unconscious responses.
