A High Efficiency White LED based Lighting System -An Energy-efficient, Cost-effective Approach for Rural Applications

In the beginning of the 21st century, white light emitting diodes (LEDs) are replacing many types of conventional light sources but most of the LED fitted luminaires are too costly for many villagers who live in non-electrified areas of remote places of the underdeveloped and developing countries. They still use kerosene lamps for their domestic chores and wasting large amount of energy to get a little amount of light. In the present paper a newly developed highly efficient white LED lighting system using readily available LEDs in the market is described. This lighting system costs very low (6.00$) and consumes 2.9 watts only from a 12 Volt maintenance-free battery (costs approx. 5.00$) giving maximum illuminance of 171 lux just 1 meter below the luminaire.
