The future of road lighting
(0) Safe driving depends on having sufficient visual information on vehicle position and road direction. The key tasks are keeping the vehicle on the road and not crashing into other cars. These tasks can be translated into customised lighting requirements depending on the amount of traffic. Technical innovations designed to improve visual information for the road user and to support the driver task will affect the use of road lighting. In the long term (20+ years) the need for public lighting will diminish or even disappear. This will help to save energy and reduce light pollution.
