Intelligent road lighting

Given the fact that todays lighting equipment is highly more efficient concerning both the optical as well as control gear performance and control possibilities, the enriched technology opens up for new design concepts. One of these concepts, intelligent road lighting (adaptive road lighting), includes step less dimming of the lamp regarding the required demands based on time changing traffic and road conditions. The main purpose of this control system is to save electricity and maintenance costs without any decrease in traffic safety. It also makes it possible to integrate city beautification into regular street lighting and hence obtain higher level of security for the public in combination with reduced obtrusive lightExperiences gained in Oslo, Norway, shows substantial energysaving potentials up to 70 % when retrofitting old installations. The work within CIE TC4-44 cover a revision of the Publication CIE 115-1995 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE LIGHTING OF ROADS FOR MOTOR AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC in such a way that lighting performance requirements may vary depending on actual status of environmental and traffic conditions. The E-street project, partly funded by EU, is established to enlarge the market for intelligent street lighting. With a broad variety of stakeholders as partners, the project performs good progress, and will publish its outcome by July 2008.
