A summary of recent road lighting research
This article summaries the key findings of three recent investigations of road lighting issues carried out by Dr Fotios and colleagues. These projects investigated road surface reflectance characteristics; the charging wattage of unmetered street lighting; and the effect of light source SPD on perception and visual performance in subsidiary streets. It has been found that road surface reflectance characteristics need to be redefined; that neither of the current methods used in the UK to predict the power demand of street lighting is accurate; and that consideration of light source SPD may enable lighting in subsidiary streets to adopt a reduced illuminance and that this trade-off may enable reductions in energy consumption.
