Rational modernisation of street lighting

In Poland street lighting consumes more than 1.5% of the total electrical energy consumption in the country. In 2001 energy consumption in street lighting amounted to 2 TWh, energy produced by burning 1 million tons of coal. A half of that can be saved thanks to the rational modernisation of street lighting installations, with positive effect not only to the budgets of local authorities, but also for the environment. The paper shows different ways of modernisation of such installations and estimates possible savings that can be obtained by each of these ways.
