A Study on Method of Evaluating Image Quality with CIECAM02

The current measurement method evaluating the image quality of display device is still useful when only the efficiency of the display devices is focused on. However, it does not mean that it can substantially represent all the customers perceptions. For example, the image quality specification of TV mainly enumerates the luminance, contrast ratio and color reproduction capability (the area of polygon which from CIE 1931 xy 1976 uv chromaticity diagrams) with the numbers. It is difficult to make a correlation between this specification and picture quality because sometimes the customer cannot agree with the numbers in the specification when they watch the certain display. Therefore, the standard method is required, which can reflect human color sensing mechanism such as lighting and chromatic adaptation action of eye.In this study, we propose a new image quality measurement method for using the CIECAM02, recommended by CIE (Commission Internationale de lEclairage). The CIECAM02, CIE Color Appearance Model 02, is a uniform color space for the prediction of the color recognized by human being. It includes the change of the recognition with various vision conditions because we analyze the color reproduction range, gray scale, and visual perception contrast ratio based on the volume in this model.Using CIECAM02, different from existing method which is simply compared to the area of 2-D color reproduction range or evaluated by luminance value, for total correlation evaluation between luminance (brightness) axis and color reappearance will show in 3-D space. This method proposed actual standard for consensus.
