Concentration and Speciation of Arsenic in Shallow Groundwater of Datong Basin, North China

Endemic arsenic poisoning due to long-term intake of high arsenic groundwater in Datong basin, Shanxi Province has become a serious problem and is typical in China. Distribution characteristics of various arsenic species in groundwater from Datong basin are studied on the basis of selective retention of arsenic species on specific solid-phase cartridges followed by selective elution. The results show that soluble arsenite (As(Ⅲ)), arsenate (As(V)), monomethylarsonate (MMA), dimethylarsinate (DMA) species and particular arsenic (As(P), d>0.45 μm) are 53.13 %, 19.80 %, 1839 %, 5.31% and 3.36% of the total arsenic respectively. In addition to high content of the total arsenic, the presence of significant proportion of arsenic as As(Ⅲ) is an important reason leading to serioni arseniasis in Datong basin.
