Delineating Water Resource Protection Area along the Trunk Canals of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project
On the base of investigation of water conveyance constructions, groundwater level and artificial drainage type of groundwater along the Middle Route Project (MRP) for South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD), this paper pointed oat that the key to protect water body in the canal is to demarcate protection areas down the canal to prevent the pollutants from invading into canals through ground water flow. Utilizing the Darcy law, the paper calculated water particle flow distances during different periods. Water particle flow distances of 5 years and 10 years were used to determine the second grade water protection distances in the canal sections where ground water level is higher than bottom level of the canal. The method used in the paper is scientifically and practically rational.
