The Groundwater Vulnerability Assessment Method: A Case of Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China

Traditional DRASTIC has been widely applied to assessment of groundwater vulnerability, but it does not reflect pedfic vulnerability. Its use of weight scoring conceals differences of rating and discontinuousness on index value. This study discusses methods of gronndwater vulnerability assessment, analyzes influence mechanism of groundwater vulnerability with topography, geology, hydrogeological conditions and other natural factors as well as human factors, and it then determines groundwater vulnerability assessment index system and grading standards. In addition, the study applies analytic hierarchy to determine weight and fuzzy theories to groundwater vulnerability assessment, and then establishes the new analytic hierarchy fuzzy model for groundwater vulnerability assessment In the case study area of Nanchang city, the zoning map of groundwater vulnerability is made. The results show that the distributing pattern of contamination is consistent with the forecasted and measured. Results of the application suggest that the new method can be a useful tool and provide useful information for environmental protection departments to protect and manage groundwater resource.
