Verifying a New Proxy of the Holocene East Asian Winter Monsoon-Grain Size of Mud on the Inner Shelf of the East China Sea

Correlation of winter temperature between climate stations in China was analyzed in this paper. Temperature and salinity changes at different sea water depths off the Zhejiang-Fujian provinces dlso were analyzed, as was velocity of surface sea water in the same area (calculated from wind field data from QuikScat Data). Grain size of the mud can be used as a good proxy to reconstruct the history of the EAWM because its sedimentation has been controlled by the winter coastal current, which resulted from the winter monsoon. In the past 400 years, the grain size of the terrigenous clastic component of the mud in the region changed synchronously with winter temperature of East China.

East Asian winter monsoon winter temperature of China mam land mud East China Sea grain-size.
