Geomicrobiological Processes in Various Extreme Environments: Theoretical and Practical Implications

The last decade has seen a tremendous growth of geomicrobiology, the interdisciplinary field of geology and microbiology. Geological environments control the abundance, diversity, and metabolic functions of microorganisms, and microorganisms play important roles in a number of geological processes such as rock weathering, mineral dissolution/precipitation, elemental cycling, water chemistry, contamination migration and degradation. In the last decade, geologists and microbiologists have taken this unprecedented opportunity to work together on various geomicrobiological processes in a number of geological environments. This short paper summarizes our main research areas in the past six years with an objective of promoting more collaboration between Chinese scientists and overseas scholars in this exciting interdisciplinary field.
