The Present Condition of Explosive Demolition Market in Korea
Explosive demolition of building structures has major advantages of fast process, low cost and safe working condition over traditional mechanical demolition methods. Environmental impact of vibration, noise, and dust generation can also be minimized because the demolition process is done in a few minutes. There have been more than 40 cases of Explosive demolition since 1990s in Korea. Although the present explosive demolition market in Korea is not so big, the demand for the technique is expected to increase rapidly in the near future. In the meantime, the gelatine dynamite, which has been traditionally used in Korea as the 2nd generation explosive, is now being rapidly replaced by an emulsion explosive of the 5th generation because of the change in life environment, economic schemes, and safety reasons. This paper presents the summaries and problems involved in the past demolition works done in Korea for 15 years and suggests a remedy for technical improvement.
