Determination of Blast Design Parameters Based on Blast Wave Action

Many researches pointed out thatradial compressive and tangential tensile strengths, formed by blast wave play an important role in rock breaking processes. The paper analyses results of previous analytical and experimental investigations, placing emphasis on role of blast wave action in the rock breakage. The paper describes some methodological aspects and procedures for determination of blast design parameters at open pit mines, taking into consideration rock breaking-off effect from the open surface, locations between blast holes and breakage zone radius etc. Comparison study of square and staggered patterns of blasting is given in the paper. Moreover, the paper presents summary results of trial and production blasts at Erdenet ore open pit, using practical and suggested blast design parameters, that illustrates advantage of suggested methodic.
