Successful Experiences of the Largest Blasting Project in the Busy Urban Area of Hong Kong

Rock blasting in the project of Development at Choi Wan Road and Jordan Valley is the largest blasting works in an urban area in the history of Hong Kong and also rare in the world. The site is located in the centre of the eastern Kowloon peninsula and is surrounded by highways, registered cut slopes, high raise buildings, MTR subways and public utilities. A total of about 6 million cubic meter of rock were excavated by blasting. The complex surrounding environment brought great difficulties and risks to the blasting works. In this paper, successful experiences of the advanced blasting technology (including nonelectric millisecond delay system with decking charges, pre-splitting technology), strict management of blasting operation, safety and environment protection measures, including the control, monitoring and analysis of slope stability, fly-rock, ground vibration and air-overpressures, are described.
