Prediction of Failure Behavior of Concrete Pillar under Blast Loading

Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of building demolition by explosive blasting. Accidents are sometimes reported due to the flying chips of fragmented materials in building demolition work in urban area. Laboratory experiments are performed to investigate the failure behavior of reinforced concrete pillars under blast loading and to develop an appropriate protection method to control the flying chips. The failure behavior and the flying chip velocities are observed by means of a high-speed camera. Protection scheme is designed and the effects of several protection materials are investigated. In order to simulate the process of pillar blasting, a new technique for source modeling is suggested using the three dimensional particle flow code. This paper presents the experimental results and numerical analysis for prediction of failure behavior of pillar blasting. The comparison between the predicted and measured flying chip velocities shows the availability of the numerical technique.
