Comparison between Initiation Modes for Linear Demolition Shape Charges
Demolition charges have their industrial as well as military uses such as demolition of bridges or breaching of steel structures. For this paper, a prototype demolition charge of throat width 50mm and length 100mm with 90 degree copper sheet liner was developed at State Key Laboratory (SKL) and selected for studies. Commercial copper and comp-B explosive were employed. Simulation and experiments were then performed to find an optimal initiation mode for the charge effectiveness. Two modes of initiation namely center point and side point were tested. Three dimensional computer simulations were first performed and then the model was experimentally tested with both modes of initiation and x-ray radiographs were obtained. Autodyn 3D software was used to perform simulations using Lagrange processor. The simulation and experimental results were then analyzed and compared. A methodology namely angle of impact is being presented which correlates the effectiveness of the mode of initiation with the angle of, impact (which collapsing copper liner makes with the target at various points). Center point initiation mode is found to be more effective than side point based on experimental evidence and supported by angle of impact methodology. Autodyn simulations are in very good agreement with the experimental radiographs.
