Digital Blasting System Applications in Mining and Demolition
The blasting industry has realized significant benefits with the advancement of Digital Blasting System technology. These systems feature programmable delays with accuracies of 1/10th of a millisecond and advanced safety and system diagnostics. These features not available in pyrotechnic initiation systems, give the blast engineer design options that enhance performance and safety. The mining industry recognized these benefits and has become the main consumer of electronic detonators in surface and underground operations. The accuracy and flexibility of the programmable systems has allowed the blast engineer to address vibration and air overpressure, fragmentation and blast optimization issues. The down-stream benefits from lower vibration, better wall control, improved casting, fragmentation and ore recovery are some of the ways electronic blasting systems have proven to be a real economic value. It wasnt long before the demolition industry recognized the value as well. Flexibility of the programmable system coupled with total system verification made digital blasting systems like the Daveytronic(R) a logical choice to improve overall safety and give the demolition engineer options never before possible. This paper presents advantages that this type of technology brings and discusses several applications from the mining and demolition industry, including some milestones in the industry.
