TSUNAMI DETECTION & EARLY WARNING by TIR REMOTE SENSING
We apply a discrete wavelet transform to Day & Night TIR satellite images of the Indian Ocean from Dec. 26, 2004. We are able to distinguish Tsunami signals from noise, and compute the Signal to Noise Ratio and the Probability of Tsunami Occurrence, which we define as the ratio of Tsunami Signal over Total Signal (Tsunami Signal plus noise). It is recommended that an urgent evacuation order be issued when the Tsunami Probability attains 80% or higher.
