High-Capacity Amorphous Carbon for Lithium-ion Batteries

Amorphous carbon materials derived from coal tar pitch were grinded to fine powders by a ball mill, coated with pitch and heat-treated. The electrochemical performance of the modified carbon, including cycle life, was investigated and compared with that of as-received amorphous carbon. The ball-milling and coating with carbon, which made the amorphous carbon to spherical-shaped particles agglomerated with very fine powders, improved discharge capacity without loss of cyclic life.
