Development of a High Power Li-Ion Secondary Battery

Experiments were performed on a 18650 type lithium-ion secondary battery prepared with spinel LiMn2O4 cathode material to determine the major factors affecting the discharge performance under big currents of lithium-ion secondary battery, such as structural design, electrode and electrolyte. In contrast with the spinel LiMn2O4 still constrained by such issues as significant capacity fading under high temperature and relatively low energy density, an innovative layered lithium manganese composite oxide material LiMnxNiyCozO2 was developed and used as the cathode material to prepare a new 18650 type high power lithium-ion secondary battery, which presented superior performances. The battery endures continuous discharge under 10C and quick charge under 8 C, and presents excellent cycling and storage performances. The development of such 18650 type high power lithium-ion secondary battery provides conducive experimental basis for developing ideal power sources for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV).
