The Determinants of Environmental Innovation: an Empirical Analysis of China
This paper analyzes the determinants of environmental innovation in China by examining a panel data set that covers 31 Chinese provinces from 2003 to 2004. The effect of pollution abatement pressures and export intensity on environmental innovation is estimated. Abatement pressures are carried out by investment in anti-pollution project and fines from cases penalized. Environmental innovation is implemented by input of funds for research on environmental science and technology. We find that the investment in anti-pollution project and fines from cases penalized both have statistically significant and positive impact on environmental innovation. Besides, there is also positive relationship between export intensity and environmental innovation. The conclusions provide some helpful suggestions for future policy making.
