The Vietnamese Pharmaceutical Market: a Comparison on Foreign Entry Strategies

This paper studies on entry strategies into the Vietnamese pharmaceutical market. It first provides an overview of the Vietnamese pharmaceutical market in terms of drug trade, health care provision, entry barriers and licensing requirements, distribution of drugs, investment location and government efforts in developing a national pharmaceutical industry. The second part of the paper provides a theoretical framework to understand the various foreign entry strategies into the Vietnamese market and factors that affect firms to opt for one strategy over another. It also reviews the pros and cons of these entry modes (licensing, joint venture, whoily-owned subsidiary, acquisition). Firms have multiple options available to them when entering an emerging market and preference for one mode over another, which depends on the market and company characteristics, a firms objectives and its risk-taking attitude.
