A Research on Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure in China: an Example from Energy Industries
In recent years, concerns about the sustainability and social responsibility (CSR) of businesses have become an increasingly high profile issue in many countries and industries, none more so than the energy industries which includes mining, water utilities, petroleum and chemical. For these industries are significantly related to social and environmental issues, the companies become the focus of the stakeholders. As a result, companies should actively communicate CSR with these stakeholders including investors. CSR annual disclosure is a good media. This paper chooses the listed companies in the energy industries as a sample, and aims to find the level and determinants of CSR disclosure by designing CSR disclosure index in China listed companies. This paper is one of the earlier ones that offers a detailed description of CRS disclosure in China listed companies and of the factors that drive the development of such disclosure. We find that the total CSR disclosure level of sample companies is not satisfactory, and needs for new external capital, CEO and board chair combined, the presence of audit committee and the proportion of shares held by the top 10 shareholders are significantly related to CSR disclosure, which are the key determinants that drive companies to disclose CSR information in annual reports.
