A Growth Engine for SMEs: a Socio-economic Network Approach to the Third Italy
Italy is world-widely noted for her huge numbers of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). After the Second World War, a large number of SMEs in the central and north-eastern parts (The Third Italy) built their competitiveness on agglomeration economy in hundreds of industrial districts (IDs). By a socio-economic network approach, this paper analyses agglomeration economy in The Third Italy against a backdrop of economic globalization. Then it describes the supporting role that socio-economic networks play in various IDs for local production systems. Finally this paper concludes that SMEs international competitiveness in industrial clusters has originated from local socio-economic networks.
