Strain Energy Density Method Applications to Forecast Rock Burst and Design Parameters of Pressure Relief Holes

Rapid release of elastic strain energy accumulated in surrounding rock mass can induce rock burst. Based on the finite-difference program FLAC3D, the elastic strain energy density method was introduced with built-in FISH programming language, and elastic strain energy distribution contours before and after pressure relief were plotted and compared with simulated stress distribution contours. The result shows that the energy method can explain the mechanism of rock burst better and provide a more reliable foundation for forecasting rock burst and optimizing parameters for bombing pressure relief method. Finally, based on the elastic strain energy distribution results, the interval distance and depth of bombing pressure relief holes were determined.
