Numerical Simulation on Failure Mechanism and Influencing Factors of the Coal Pillar

Pillar failure is an important rock mechanics increasing the coal recovery ratio. In the paper, starting from the mining need of the Halagou mine, according to the condition of the existing strata and production technology, a mechanical model was set up by proper simplification, and the failure process and influencing factors of the pillar was studied by using a RFPA2D code. Particularly, the deformation field, acoustic emission and evolving characteristic of stress field were analyzed. Meanwhile, the effect of different ratio of width to height on the ultimate bearing ability and roof-control ability was clarified, which can provide reference for a safe and economical pillar design. Furthermore, the numerical simulation result can guide to design other coal pillar in similar mining condition.
