Study on Effect of Excavation Process on Stability of Cross Intersection Using Numerical Simulation

The effect of different excavation methods on the deformation and stress variation of the cross intersection has been analyzed numerically using Flac3D with strain softening criteria. The results demonstrate that the evolving laws of stress and deformation have similar variation trend. Key steps that make plastic zone, stress and deformation change suddenly exists in every method, and it should be paid attention to when they are excavated; The deformation of ribs is larger than that of roof and floor, obvious deformation appears within 10m from intersection, and in where deformation of earlier excavated roadway is larger; Comparing with different excavation methods employed, excavation method(4) shown the gradual variation on the stress and deformation, two ribs convergence of main and branch roadways is similar, and smaller values of deformation are obtained, which indicated that this excavation method may be considered as the best method for underground cross intersection construction.
