Study on the Optimization of the Fully Mechanized Top-Coal Caving Mining Techniques in Steep-Thick Coal-Seams

PFC2D (Particle Flow Code in 2 Dimensions) models the movement and interaction of circular particles by the distinct element method(DEM). The numerical investigation using PFC2D reveals the falling and moving process of the top-coal and rocks in loose state. The dynamic characteristics of coal failure with the different caving distance under the condition of uninterrupted advancing are analyzed. The recovery rate of the top-coal and the working condition of the hydraulic supports in the top-coal caving working face with the different caving sequence are also discussed in detail. The study shows that in the mining sequence from above to below in the polyline-type mechanized working face, the recovery rate of the top-coal is high and the force applied on the supports is uniform. The research results are important for the design and optimization of the caving mining.
