Numerical Study on the Effects of Roof Lithologic Characteristics on Coal Bursting Potential

Bursting potential of coal is the inherent attribute and necessary condition to induce a rockburst. There are many factors that can influence coal bursting potential,but roof lithologic characteristics are the intrinsic controlling factors. During coal mining, roof lithologic characteristics have an important action on the distributions of stress field, displacement field and energy field in coal bed and its surrounding rock. Based on the field data of 5# coal and its surrounding rock of 3652 working face in Tangshan colliery, distributions of stress field, behaviors of deformation-failure and variation of elastic strain energy in coal bed and its surrounding rock were modeled and analyzed under different lithologic characteristics of roof by using numerical modeling software of FLAC3D (Three Dimensional Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua). It aims to systematically study the effects of roof lithologic characteristics on distribution of stress field and variation of energy field, and to profoundly discuss the controlling action of Youngs modulus of roof on coal bursting potential. Results show that Youngs modulus of roof has an obvious influence on the distribution of stress field and energy field in coal bed and its surrounding rock. With the increasing of Young modulus of roof (the strengthening of rock lithologic characteristics), there are higher stress and elastic strain energy concentrating front of working face, which improves the bursting potential of coal bed during coal mining.
