Meso Mechanical Mechanism Study of Coals Strength Characteristics
Coal is a kind of rocky minerals which deposited and evolved from ancient corrupted plants in surface, and it was influenced by the ancient climate and deposition environment. All these resulted in the coals complexity and variety in meso structure and constitution in coal seam. There are a large number of grain cements and weak structure faces such as micro holes, micro cracks, stratifications and joints, and so on. Coal is a kind of typical microscopic non-homogeneousness, and its macroscopic mechanical parameters are closely related to original microscopic structures. Study of the correlation between the microscopic structure and the strength and deformation of coal contributes to a profound understanding of coals strength and deformation characteristics in the meso level. Area rate of micro holes and micro cracks in coal can be expressed by damage variable. Tests on mechanical property and scanning electron microscope tests of coal samples indicate that the original damage variable is quite different with coal types. Original damage variable influences the macroscopic mechanical parameters of coal deeply. Tests results indicate that coals damage variable Ω increases by 38.4%, its uniaxial compressive strength decreases by 33.3%, and elastic modulus decreases by 30.8%.
