Difference Analysis on 2D and 3D Numerical Models to Tunnel Support

Numerical calculation is important to the tunnel support design, but the array pitch is not considered in many cases, so a 2D model is applied to substitute for the 3D model. This paper discusses the difference of the two models by means of the FLAC3D with Mohr-Coulomb and Drucker-Prager mechanical model. The plain strain models fixed on end faces or axes direction of tunnel and 3 dimensions models applied on end faces with displacement caused by initial stress field are created. It can be concluded that the plastic zone of the plain strain model is bigger than that of 3D model, and the failure is earlier. Drucker-Prager mechanical model is suitable for soft clay and the results are over safe to rock materials. Then the phenomenon is discussed in theory simply, which reason is that the two kinds of models have different boundary conditions.
