Discuss on Key Structural Blocks which Dominate the Caving Process of Complex Overlying Strata
Caving process of complex overlying strata is one of the most important issues in underground metal mines with caving method. Researching on that issue must take into account the rock structure, in-situ stress and mining planning. Monitoring results demonstrate that there exist key rock structures in overlying strata. They are more stable than other rock masses, and they dominate the caving process. Conceptions of Key Structural Blocks are put forward in this paper, and some issues about key structural blocks are discussed such as the existing necessities, mechanical characteristics, spatial structural shapes, fracturing and collapsing modes and influence on mining work. Viewpoint of Key Structural Blocks can be performed to explain such phenomenon as collapsing intermittently and abruptly of overlying strata, deforming slowly and chaotic before abrupt cave-in of surface. Further studies can help to understand the caving process of overlying strata, to predict the caving-in time, deformation scope of earth surface, and to plan suitable mining process, etc.
