An Application of IRT to Detect Fire Damage of Concrete Structures

The infrared thermalgraphy (IRT) can be used to detect the state and damage degree of material, and to judge the material property. Based on the principle of IRT, twenty-seven damaged concrete cubes with and without mortar cover after subjected to high temperature were tested and analyzed by infrared thermalgraphy. Based on the test results, the relation curves of average temperature rising acquired from infrared thermal images of damaged concrete cubes to the time of heating was established, and four regressive equations of the average temperature rising of infrared thermal images to the highest subjected temperature of concrete cubes and to the compressive strength reduction index of concrete cubes were proposed. From the test and analysis result, it is indicated that the mortar cover could effectively mitigate the fire damage of concrete structure and a favorable fire-resistant behavior of a RC structure rendered with mortar cover can be expected.
