Application of Electromagnetic Wave to Detecting Tectonic Soft Coal
The current high level of coal production is rapidly depleting easily minable coal reserves. Future mining will gradually concentrate in deeper underground coal seams. Accordingly the coal and gas outbursts occur more easily during the coal production for the increase of the gas pressure and content in the coal seams. Predicting and forecasting of the outbursts become more and more important by a non-contact detecting technique. In general, the distribution area and thickness of the tectonic soft coal is indicative of the outburst conditions. To detect the tectonic soft coal has been become an indispensable work. As an example, an electromagnetic wave technique of detecting and imaging of this coal was conducted and investigated in Pansan coal mine, Huainan coalfield. The results show that this technique is capable of detecting the distribution area and relative thickness of the tectonic soft coal based upon the magnitude of the electromagnetic wave attenuation after penetration. The validity of this technique has been verified by coal mining. The unsolved problems are how to quantify the thickness and to distinguish the layer number of the tectonic soft coal from the unmined coal seams.
