Development of Water Mist Fire Suppression System for Controlling Gas Burning in Drilling Hole
The prevention and suppression of gas burning is a very topical field of research because maybe many coal mine workers became their victims. In this research a very effective water mist suppression technology has been introduced to prevent and control gas burning in drilling hole which occurred during drilling at Wu20160 working-face in No.10 coal mine of Pingdingshan Ltd.. A water mist fire suppression system (WMFSS) for controlling gas burning in drilling hole has been developed. Spray characteristics of water mist nozzle such as the Sauter mean diameter (SMD), the velocity and the spray angle, which are the main parameters determining the performance of controlling gas burning, have been obtained by using LS-2000 Laser Sizer. The water flow rate of nozzle and the water flux density distribution over the cross section downstream the nozzle exit are measured by cup collector method. Gas burning flame-water mist interaction is visualized by digital camera. Quantitative performance of this system has been presented by time required for extinguishment and water consumption. The tests on suppression of combustion of a methane-air mixture at a laboratory conditions using this WMFSS have been carried out. The experimental results show that the WMFSS can control effectively the gas burning in drilling hole and reduce quickly the flame temperature of gas burning below the ignition point of the gas. The possibility of gas burning in coal mine can be effectively avoided.
