Effect of Ventilation on Backdraft Using Fire Dynamics Simulator

Backdraft is a hazard that threatens the firefighters safety. This paper simulates a building, including a GA 111-1995 standard room fire using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) with the consideration of different ventilation modes. The results show that ventilation opening time, tv, and opening degree, Wv, are key factors to the backdraft occurrence. Backdraft does not occur when ventilation opening time is short. With increasing the ventilation opening time, extremely short time backdraft and long-playing backdraft occur successively. When Wv is less than 0.1 m, backdraft does not occur either. Finally, different concentration-time curve peak forms as U-shaped and V-shaped are also obtained at different ventilation opening degree.
