Thickness and Granularity Effects on Oxygen Absorption in Coal Samples
Two types of coal samples were used in oxygen absorption experiments. The physical oxygen absorption was measured by the method of chromatography. Coal samples with different thickness in the test tube were examined. Absorbed oxygen reached its maximal value while the thickness equaled the semi-height of the test tube. And the absorbed oxygen per unit coal decreased with the thickness. Its characteristic of the variation was similar to that of ratio of top surface area to the volume of the coal sample. Coal samples with different granularities were also studied. Absorbed oxygen decreased with the granularity. When the granularity was less than 0.3mm, absorbed oxygen varied intensely. And absorbed oxygen trended to constant while the granularity was larger than 0.3mm. The used bituminous coal was apt to spontaneous combustion, while the used blind coal was difficult to spontaneous combustion in reality. But in all experiments, oxygen absorbed by the bituminous coal was always less than that by the blind coal in the same situation.
