Evaluation of Ecological Safety in Mining Area Based on Ecological Footprint

The mining area is becoming the focus area with the most seriously confliction of human and environment, and the ecological and environmental safety are confronted with tremendous menace. In order to protect the ecological safety and realize the sustainable development of economy, society and ecosystem in mining area, the status of ecological safety in mining area shall be evaluated objectively. Ecological footprint theory provides a practical tool for studying the sustainable development and ecological safety. The status of ecological safety can be measured with the difference between ecological footprint and ecological capacity. The ecological footprint and capacity value from year 1996 to 2004 are calculated in this paper, and then the ecological deficit is analyzed. The research result shows that the ecological deficit per capita is becoming greater, among all kinds of ecological productive land, only the cultivated land meets the requirements. The maximal deficit is fuel land, which shows that the rapidly developing economy is consuming a mass of energy and raising more pollution. The deficit of constructed land also become greater. There are some fluctuations in other ecological deficits. The rising deficit indicates that the development is on the status of unsustainable mode and the ecological safety is be threatening.
