Investigation of Heavy Metals in Crops around Coal Gangue Dumps in Jiaozuo

The impact of coal mine dump contaminated soil on the heavy metals uptake by wheat and corn was studied. The crops were grown around the coal mine dumps. The content of four metals, namely, Pb, Zn, Cr and Cu were determined when the crop matured. The samples were digested and subjected to heavy metal analysis using the AAS. Compared with the national hygienic standard for grains, the results indicate that the exceeding rate of Pb, Cr, and Cu concentrations in corn were 85.3%, 17.6%and 5.9% respectively, and Pb and Cr in wheat were 100% and 15.8% respectively. The research suggests that coal gangue dumps has an an unfavorable impact on crop quality.
