Pseudo-oscillator approach to analyzing periodic solutions of nonlinear time-delay systems

The paper presents a novel method, named pseudo-oscillator approach, so as to analyze the local dynamics, near a Hopf bifurcation, of a type of scalar nonlinear time delay systems. The basic idea of the method is to construct a pseudo-oscillator slightly perturbed from an undamped oscillator, where the disturbance is associated with the scalar nonlinear time delay system, and then to estimate the averaged power of the new system along a harmonic function. The pseudo-oscillator approach not only features a clear physical intuition and easy computation, but also yields very accurate prediction for the bifurcating periodic solution as shown in two demonstrative examples.
