Nonlinear waves—review of techniques and applications
This paper presents a personal view of some of the developments that have taken place in the study of nonlinear wave propagation over a period of several decades, together with mention of some of their applications. The techniques include the classical theory of shock waves for equations in divergence form, an unexpected connection with catastrophe theory, the study of weak solutions, the study of dissipative and dispersive equations, Backlund transformations, symmetry properties, Lie algebras and uniform asymptotic methods.
