Localization of solitons over a rough seabed

We describe some recent theories on the effects of incoherent scattering of shallow water waves by a randomly irregular seabed. Weakly nonlinear and dispersive waves are studied. The perturbation method of multiple scales is used to derive the stochastic average of the free surface height. Both the surface wave on a homogeneous layer and the interfacial wave on a two-layered system are discussed. Under the assumptions of constant mean depth, the evolution equation is shown to be an integral differential equation combining the features of KdV and Burgers equations. Random scattering is seen to induce diffusion and modify the phase velocity and dispersion.
