Deformations of carbon nanotubes

摘要：

The purpose of this paper is to study the deformation process of single wall CNTs in tensile strain. A hybrid continuum/atomistic model is adopted in this study. It is shown that, even without a preexisting defect, a defect like the form of Stone- Wales transformation may nucleate in the CNT at the critical tensile strain. This nucleated defect later becomes the site of bond breaking, and is therefore the precursor of CNT failure.
