Approximate analysis and experimental investigation for contact problem of rubber-like sphere compressed between two rigid plates

The elastic contact problem of the rubber-like sphere compressed between two parallel rigid flat surfaces was analyzed by introducing some assumptions. The present simplified model is different from the Hertz theory. The material of rubber-like sphere was assumed to obey hyperelastic constitutive relation based on the neo-Hookean strain energy function. An approximate expression of normal displacement depending on contact force was obtained by using the minimum potential energy approach and asymptotic expansions. A compression experiment on the sphere was performed to verity the presented approximate analytical results. The investigation shows that the present approximate analytical results are closed well with the experimental data, even for the case of large deformation.
