Effects of surface energy on stress concentration around a nanosized spheroidal cavity
The effects of surface energy on the stress concentration around a spheroidal cavity in an isotropic elastic medium are analyzed based on the surface elasticity. Using the Boussinesq-Sadowskys potential functions, we obtained the stress, concentration around the spheroidal cavity subjected to uniaxial uniform load. It is shown that when the size of the cavity reduces to the same order of the ratio of surface energy density to applied stress, the contribution from surface energy becomes important, and the shape of the cavity significantly affects the stresses around the cavity. The results are evidently different from the classical results obtained by the linear elasticity, and helpful to understand some relevant mechanical phenomena with nano-sized cavities.
