Engine structure analysis with simulation and measurement
Oil and fuel consumption, gas blow-by and piston noise are strongly influenced by cylinder bore distortion. To predict and therefore minimize cylinder bore distortion in cylinder block design is essential to improve engine performance and to comply with increasingly more stringent exhaust emissions standards. In mis paper two cylinder blocks with different design concepts are considered as initial configurations. Both measurements and simulation on cool cylinder bore distortion have been done and the correlation is very good. The temperature distribution in cylinder block and head in worst case of full load (WOT) is measured and the simulation is validated. Based on the results, the hot cylinder bore distortion of different cylinder block configurations and designs are analyzed. By using Fourier analysis, one can clearly see the advantages and disadvantages of different designs and the reasons for them.
